Update: This business has ceased its operations.
Max Gourmet (美食之家) is a sister chain restaurant in Penang. This outlet is located on a row of shops opposite Queensbay Mall. The restaurant is usually very crowded as both parking and dining tables are limited. It is among the better dim sum places around Penang.
The trio of us had our dinner here. It was over 8:00pm but business was still non-stop. It took us a while to get a dining table and place our orders.
Right off the bat, we ordered 2 rice dishes to quickly extinguish our stomach acid: Oriental Fried Rice (扬州炒饭, RM5.90) and Italy Style Fried Rice (意大利式风味炒饭, RM10.90). Although the rice is nice and warm from the wok, I feel that both are almost identical except that the latter has lots of anchovies.
We also included some mainstream dim sum dishes, such as Crispy Egg Tart (贵妃酥皮蛋达, RM1.50), Steamed BBQ Pork Bun (叉烧包, RM1.40), Steamed Glutinous Rice With Chicken (糯米鸡, RM3.00) and Deep Fried Radish Cake (萝卜糕, RM3.00). In general, Max Gourmet's reputation in dim sum is justified.
For drinks, we had a glass of iced Ying Yong (鸳鸯, RM3.00), Ginseng And Water Chestnut (沙参玉竹马蹄水, RM3.00) and Winter Melon With Sea Coconut (冬瓜元肉海底椰, RM3.00). In particular, the herbal drinks were refreshing!
The meal was not terribly expensive, considering the quality and its location beside a large shopping mall. It was definitely worth a visit!
