Pasar Baru

Special thanks to New World Petaling Jaya Hotel for extending this food review invitation.

New World Petaling Jaya Hotel is the first hotel to hold a Ramadan preview this year. The event is held at the hotel's bazaar-style coffeehouse, Pasar Baru. Themed "Santapan Warisan", this year's menu features over 100 dishes that span multiple cuisines.
The main highlight this evening is Kambing Panggang. Seasoned with Middle-Eastern spices, the roasted lamb is served with aromatic Kabsa Rice. Condiments like mint sauce are provided.
As for Satay, the menu covers chicken and beef versions. I am particularly impressed by the latter as the marinated beef is succulent indeed. The skewered meats are customarily eaten with peanut sauce, nasi impit (pressed rice), shallots and cucumbers.
Another signature dish that deserves a special mention is Sup Gearbox, which I find wonderfully rich and tasty. The bone marrow is considered a delicacy too. The cow's femur resembles a gear stick, which explains how the dish got its name.
Moving on to hot dishes, the main highlights today are Ayam Penyet, Daging Lada Hitam, Kambing Masak Merah and Ikan Goreng Berempah. Of course, Bubur Lambuk is essential when breaking fast.
Bamboo Biryani and Curry Fish Head go rather well with each other. As for Chinese cooking, popular dishes are Kung Pao Chicken, Wok-Fried Beef, Steamed Fish With Tofu Skin, Yang Chow Fried Rice and Cantonese Fried Noodles.
The Indian section of the kitchen has large tandoor ovens where Tandoori Chicken, Hariyali Fish Tikka and Naan are prepared. Other prominent dishes from the subcontinent are Murgh Makhani (butter chicken), Lamb Rohanjosh and Vegetable Jalfrizy.
I am pleased to see a variety of Nasi Kandar dishes as part of the buffet spread. Today's choices are Nasi Minyak, Dalcha Kambing, Daging Masak Hitam, Telur Dadar, Ayam Goreng Berempah and Kubis Goreng.
The Santapan Warisan buffet features several action counters where à la minute dishes are prepared. For instance, Curry Laksa is served at the noodles counter.
The Chicken Rice here is commendable too. The accompanying chili sauce and garlic sauce accentuate the chicken's flavor to a whole new level.
The pastry section presents a colorful assortment of Malay kuih such as Kuih Lapis, Kuih Ketayap, Bingka Ubi, Tapai and Onde-Onde. Warm desserts include Bubur Pulut Hitam and Bubur Pulut Hijau.
Towards the end of the meal, quench your thirst with refreshing drinks such as Sirap Bandung, Soy Milk and Sugarcane Juice. Hot beverages like Teh Tarik are available too.
Pasar Baru's Warisan Santapan is available daily from 13 April 2021 to 12 May 2021. The regular price is RM148.00 net per person, but early birds enjoy a special price of RM118.00 net. In parallel, the hotel also offers private buffets for larger groups at the Grand Ballroom.
Should you prefer to dine in the comfort of your own home, Pasar Baru has Jom Makan set meals for take-away and delivery. Priced at RM120.00 net for two, each set meal consists of an appetizer, soup, 3 hot dishes, vegetable, rice and dessert.
