Uncle Chee Muah Chee

Special thanks to Uncle Chee Muah Chee for extending this food review invitation.

Update: This business has ceased its operations.

Uncle Chee Muah Chee (Uncle Chee 麻糍) has found a more permanent location in Queensbay Mall, directly in front of the grocery section of Aeon and just around the corner from Little Bites.
This mom-and-pop business was formerly operating at My Own Café (我的咖啡馆) at Cannon Street, but that stall has been discontinued due to lack of manpower. However, the proprietors behind Uncle Chee Muah Chee are committed to retain the same enjoyment which regular customers have known and love.
This new stall in Queensbay Mall carries the same four types of muah chee (麻糍) flavors at the same price. Despite higher operating cost here, the price for each box of muah chee (RM3.50-RM4.00) remains unchanged.
Like before, 3 boxes of any flavor is offered at RM10.00, making this an attractive deal for larger parties. For individual snacking portion, a box of muah chee and a drink is priced at RM5.50.
The four types of flavors are Original (原味, RM3.50), Corn (玉米, RM4.00), Yam (芋头, RM4.00) and Pandan (香兰, RM4.00). Pandan is the only flavor which I did not try previously, so I am glad that all flavors are now readily available every day. There are plans to introduce new flavors in the future depending on customers' response.
In a nutshell, muah chee is a sweet snack made from glutinous rice flour. After cooking in a steamer, the chewy dough is cut into bite-size chunks. The rice balls are then shaken with ground peanuts and then sprinkled with sesame seeds. At Uncle Chee Muah Chee, the peanuts are roasted, ground and sweetened in-house to maintain freshness.
Unlike the previous location at My Own Café, Uncle Chee Muah Chee currently has a free hand to serve drinks too. Which it does, albeit only one type: Salty Lime Juice (酸柑汁, RM2.50). I personally prefer the drink to be sourer, but this may result in a taste which is too bitter for most people.
As always, Uncle Chee Muah Chee prepares food as naturally as possible. Apart from the sampling platter, muah chee is only made upon order. No artificial flavoring, coloring or preservatives are used. None of the ingredients is derived from animal sources, making this an ideal snack for vegetarians.
